Tuition Fees "Tip of Iceberg" of Canada's Student Protests - with video ~ link ~ In Canada what started as a student protest against tuition fee hikes has now turned into a much broader protest movement with demands ranging from economic to environmental, humanitarian issues and police harsh crackdown.

Can the authorities stem its growth and how is all this affecting a revived debate on an independent Quebec, the heart of the recent protests?

Talks continue between Quebec provincial government and students over tuition protests ~ link ~ The Charest government is behaving terribly.  The fascist Law 78 has got to go, and the government needs to give way on the tuition problem, and give a mass pardon to all those arrested in the protests, especially under Law 78.   Stirling     

Talks between Quebec’s Liberal government and associations representing the province’s university and CEGEP (pre-university and technical college) students failed to produce an agreement Wednesday, after student leaders rejected a government offer to scale back tuition fee increases by a mere $35 per year. Negotiations continued late into the night.

Government officials made clear that they did not intend to back down on the lion’s share of the 82 percent university tuition fee hike the Charest government is demanding, to try to impose the “user-pay” principle in the financing of public services.

It's time to start watching the Giant Student Protests in Quebec ~ link ~ After sometime, perhaps around the 100 day march, the strike became a little too big to ignore. We saw videos of seemingly endless lines people marching through the center of the city.  One particular march last week was estimated at between 300,000 to 400,000 people.

To put that in context, the larger Occupy Wall Street marches have been estimated at around 15,000 iin October 2011, or up to 25,000 in May's "general strike" . Most of the anti-Putin protests we saw in Moscow this winter seemed to cap out at estimates of 180,000.  400,000 people is — in pretty much any context — huge. It is around a quarter of the Montreal's population.

US President Barack Obama, though widely expected to pursue direct action against Syrian ruler Bashar following the Houla atrocity, is preoccupied with what he regards as a greater threat to the world: a potential grab for the huge Syrian stock of chemical and biological weapons by Al Qaeda’s or other terrorist organizations. The US president is trying to persuade Russian President Vladimir Putin to accept his new plan for the immediate assignment by the UN Security Council of 3,000 armed monitors to Syria to take charge of the six chemical and biological stores. Another 2,000 will join the team later.

The US has made much of its transfer of the detainees at Parwan Detention Facility to Afghan government control. This, as with so many other “transition” moves, has been hyped as enormously significant, but in reality is superficial.

For the detainees, nothing has really changed. They’re still stuck on a US military base, with their “administrative detention” nominally under Afghan control, but access to them is still strictly controlled and the Afghan general running the facility is hopeful for future influence, but still mostly a figurehead.

Pakistan denies that US troops have re-entered Pakistan ~ link ~  Pakistani military Thursday denied claims by U.S. officials that American troops have returned to the country in a supposed training role several months after Islamabad forced their departure following a NATO strike that had killed 24 soldiers.

An anonymous U.S. official was quoted as saying that about 10 U.S. military trainers were reintroduced back into Pakistan to assist Pakistan’s Frontier Corps in counter-insurgency warfare.

Russia will NOT change stance on Syria says senior Putin aide ~ link ~ The spokesman of Russian President Vladimir Putin says Moscow will not change its stance toward Syria under “someone’s pressure.”

Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that Russia’s position regarding the Syrian issue is “well-known… balanced and consistent and completely logical,” according to the Russian Interfax news agency.

“So it is hardly appropriate to talk about this position changing under someone’s pressure.”

Peskov made the remarks two days after a number of Western countries announced on May 29 that they were expelling senior Syrian diplomats in an apparently coordinated move to protest the May 25 violence in the western Syrian town of Houla.

However, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that the move was “counter-productive.”

Chinese President invites Ahmadinejad to SCO summit ~ link ~ Chinese President Hu Jintao has invited Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to attend the 12th summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in China due in early June.

The leaders of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Afghanistan have also been invited to the event, scheduled for June 6-7 in Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Weimin said in a Thursday news conference.

The participants in the SCO summit would discuss current regional and international developments during the meeting.

White House Insider: Obama in serious trouble - And that makes him very dangerous ~ link ~ Well…then it hits me.  Dumbass like me- sometimes I gotta get hit over the head with it before I figure it out.  They are back in Chicago because the ones who invested in this whole thing…Obama’s career…all the way to the White House…they were getting nervous.  They want a return on this investment, so they want the re-election efforts…they want all of that right under them so they can keep it close.  So they can jerk Obama’s chain if they need to.  Because if Obama doesn’t get that second term…the plan is left unfinished and in danger of being undone.   And they are gonna be pissed.  And that scares the sh-t out of Barack Obama.  He owes these people. He owes them for everything.  Everything he’s got – they gave to him.  Everything.  The guy’s Manchurian to the shoes on his feet.
